After mentioning Power Rangers: The Movie for the Genesis and Mega Drive yesterday, I feel it’s only fair to mention the marginally superior Power Rangers game on the SNES, called Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers: The Fighting Edition.
Unlike the Movie game on the Genesis/Mega Drive, which was a side-scrolling beat em up, this game is purely a 1v1 fighting game, featuring just the mega zords and monsters. There are 3 different modes to play: Story Mode – the single player experience, Fighting Mode – The versus mode for 2 players, and Trial Mode – A survival type mode against the computer.

The game is more or less just a basic fighting game, but it has the Power Rangers licence and mega zords from both seasons 2 and 3 (the Thunder Megazord is my favourite mega zord of all time!), so for obvious reasons, it’s fucking awesome. You also get to fight Lord Zedd and Ivan Ooze is unlockable, so that’s also morphinomenal phenomenally good. What really sets this game apart from other Power Rangers titles though, is that it plays like a solid, legitimate fighting game. I mean, it’s actually *gulp* rather good. There are combos, special moves and the animation is incredibly fluid. It may not quite be Street Fighter, but regardless, it’s still a really solid fighter and an essential purchase for any Power Rangers fan (yes, we do exist and no, we’re not all children).
